Workforce Initiatives in the Midwest

At the MTWC Strategic Advisory Meeting in April 2015, attendees identified a number of possible initiatives for improving transportation workforce development in the Midwest. In the interim, stakeholder groups have continued to discuss and refine these initiatives.

These initiative descriptions will inform discussions about many of these topics at the upcoming Midwest Transportation Workforce Summit, as well as provide a strategic direction for the Center’s ongoing work.

Wittwer to Present at 2015 Wisconsin Tribal Transportation Conference

MTWC consultant Ernie Wittwer will present at the 2015 Wisconsin Tribal Transportation Conference. His session, entitled Midwest Transportation Workforce Center–Addressing the Future Now is scheduled for 3:30-4:14pm on November 4. Wittwer will talk about the MTWC and it’s work, and the upcoming Summit in particular.

Wolter wins Big Thinker Award

The MTWC congratulates MTWC advisory committee member Kurt Wolter, who recently won the Big Thinker Award that the 2015 Illinois Technology Education Conference.

Wolter is a technology teacher at the Rochelle Township High School in Rochelle, Illinois. He has developed several lab activities to teach students about the basics of transportation and excite them about transportation as a career.

Midwest Transportation Workforce Summit: Addressing the Future Now!
December 7-8, 2015

The Summit organizers invite proposals from educators, researchers, practitioners, and organizations to showcase innovative initiatives, projects, or products for transportation career awareness, preparation, or training. Proposals should address at least one of the following areas:

  • Internships, apprenticeships, summer programs, mentorships, and publications
  • Career guidance and advancement
  • Career pathways
  • Competency models and certification

Accepted proposers will be invited to display or demonstrate their project, activity, or initiative. All Summit attendees will have access to the displays during the conference reception on December 7. Showcase presenters will need to register for the conference.

Proposals are due November 10, 2015.

MTWC at the 2015 ITEC Conference

MTWC Director Teresa Adams will be presenting at the 2015 Illinois Technology Education Conference (ITEC) on October 16-17 in Normal, Illinois. She’ll talk about building partnerships to develop tomorrow’s transportation workforce on Friday, October 16 at 11am. Come and learn about how the MTWC identifies current transportation workforce initiatives and how we’re working to engage  regionally existing programs to catalyze new partnerships and to communicate programs and best practices to educators, employers, and those on the transportation career pathway.

The MTWC will convene public- and private-sector stakeholders in transportation, education, economic development, and other areas as we continue to work to improve transportation workforce development in the Midwest and across the United States.

Come for one and a half days packed with expert panels, roundtable discussions, and focused presentations that will inform and inspire new workforce development initiatives and innovative partnerships. Adams to Present at the 2015 Conference on Freight

MTWC Director Teresa Adams will give a presentation about the MTWC’s current workforce initiatives and talk about the upcoming Midwest Transportation Workforce Summit during a panel session at the 2015 Conference on Freight in Cincinnati, Ohio

The NOW HIRING: DELIVERING TALENT SOLUTIONS will take place on Tuesday, September 15 from 3:10-4:10pm. Dr. Adams will join Daniel Ricciardi (Tri-State Transportation and Logistics Council) and Brian Jaynes (Cincinnati State Technical and Community College) to consider the best practices that companies and institutions are deploying to train, attract, and retain employees in the transportation/supply chain workplace.

Strategic Advisory Meeting Report Available

MTWC SAM Report CoverOn April 21-22, 2015 the Midwest Transportation Workforce Center (MTWC) convened a Strategic Advisory Meeting. This meeting brought together experts and stakeholders in transportation, education, workforce development, and economic development from across the Midwest to identify current and emerging priority occupations and skills of need, to explore regional partnership opportunities, and to develop a plan for engaging the broader transportation community in workforce development.

Meeting attendees and MTWC staff collaborated to identify promising initiatives and potential partnerships for transportation workforce development in the Midwest. The MTWC will use these results to inform its ongoing work, produce a strategic plan for 2015/2016, and to frame the agenda for the Fall 2015 MTWC Regional Workforce Summit.
