This workshop is part of the Transportation Research Board 96th Annual Meeting.

This workshop provides a candid examination and discussion of the career paths of assorted professionals at various stages in their journey. The speakers will discuss the career choices they have made and provide some insight into what it is like to work in their respective sectors. The workshop concludes with interaction in which the audience engages the speakers and other sector representatives in an entertaining and useful question and answer session and open discussion.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is Opportunity to Reflect on this Occupation that is Key to Midwest Economy

September 11-17 is National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. Here in the Midwest, Truck Drivers are a key part of the supply chain and crucial to the economy. The role of truck drivers will continue to be indispensable to the success and growth of commerce in this region.

Last year, the Midwest Transportation Workforce Center (MTWC) released its report on the workforce needs within the transportation industry. The MTWC’s Job Needs and Priorities Report: Phase I drew on state 2012 labor data from the Midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The MTWC found that the demand for Heavy and Tractor-trailer Truck Drivers will exceed that of any other occupation in the Midwest between 2012-2022.  Read more

WORKSHOP – Supply Chain Management and Logistics: How to Develop and Sustain a Successful Program

Supply Chain Management and Logistics is an important career field both in the U.S. and around the world. Attend this pre-conference workshop at the National Career Pathways Network annual conference to learn how to:

  • find data needed to justify a program
  • identify and approach industry partners
  • market the program to students, parents and the community
  • develop a program that includes dual enrollment classes with the potential of continuing on to a BA program
  • find the resources that you need to start and sustain your program
  • determine which certifications are best for your students

Participate in two industry tours. First, tour the new 1.2 million square foot state of the art Walmart e-commerce fulfillment center in Plainfield, Indiana now serving consumers throughout the U.S. Walmart built the new e-commerce fulfillment center to handle its rapidly growing online business. The massive building is dedicated to fulfilling e-commerce orders, and is able to house millions of items and ship them to customers or stores for free pickup. The Plainfield facility is the latest addition to Walmart’s next-generation fulfillment network that consists of additional e-commerce fulfillment centers, then tour the Vincennes University’s Logistics Training and Education Center (VU LTEC) which features a one-of-a-kind experience, combining classroom instruction with hands-on learning in the 40,000 square foot warehouse. Students put into action what they have learned using the latest equipment and technology. VU LTEC offers both short-term training (Fork-Lift, CDL Class A, GLA, Team Lead) and credit-bearing academic programs (Supply Chain Logistics Management AS).

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION: As workforce members continue to depart organizations, with them goes a significant amount of critical knowledge that is essential to conducting the public’s business within their former organization. As organizations prepare for the potential departure of valuable staff, a major concern is how to preserve the knowledge that these seasoned employees have amassed. Various types of knowledge retention strategies can be utilized so that critical knowledge does not “walk out the door.” This presentation will illustrate an overall strategy and associated tactics to enable an agency to systematically capture and transfer knowledge.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Organizational management, HR staff, and supervisors.

UW–Superior Transportation Day for Girls Scouts Inspires Career Interest

Career awareness efforts are most effective when they inspire interest among young people. An event hosted by the Transportation and Logistics Management Research Center at the University of Wisconsin–Superior is designed to do just that. By partnering with a local council of the Girl Scouts, Dr. Richard Stewart, the center’s director, has developed a day-long event that brings elementary and middle-school-aged girls to the UW–Superior campus to explore careers in transportation.

The program was developed after Stewart learned about the “Trucks are for Girls” Fun Patch created by the Women in Trucking Association with Girl Scouts in the Chicago area. Stewart worked to develop the UW–Superior program with Cassie Roemhildt, a research associate who is also the mom of two girl scouts. They built on knowledge shared by Women in Trucking and pulled-in support from industry sponsors as well as from the National Center for Freight & Infrastructure Research & Education (CFIRE).

“It’s interesting to see that, at age twelve, many girls are already thinking about their careers,” said Roemhildt. “This event shows girls the ‘hidden empire’ of transportation.” Read more

Jobs for the Future’s Toolkit Helps Colleges Implement Work-Based Learning

With case studies, videos, a report, and an online toolkit, national non-profit, Jobs for the Future (JFF), provides a model for implementing work-based learning programs for community colleges.

The toolkit, called Work-Based Learning in Action, tackles a key challenge facing many prospective employees: relevant work experience is often required for employment, but can be difficult to obtain prior to entering the workplace. Work-based learning, promoted by this toolkit, is one solution.

JFF has identified seven principles for effective work-based learning. Each of the case studies focuses on a successful program using one or more of these principles.
